Genus description :
Watsonia is entirely restricted to South Africa:with 30 wintergrowing species from western and southern Cape (Port Elizabeth to Namaqualand) and about 20 evergreen or summergrowing species in the north eastern part of South Africa (from Port Elizabeth northwards) of which 17 species belong to the section Gladioloide. It appearance is very much like a gladiolus, but its flowers are trumpet shaped. Very often chlorose problems in alkaline soils.
