The genus

4 centuries ago the first tulips came from Turkey and even from further East. However, the creation of the actual hybrids and selections havealso been largely influenced by the botanical species from the mediterraean area, of which some eaxmples are presented here. They tolerate high temperatures and are resistent to virus and other diseases and make them especially interesting to be used for perenial plantings of garden tulips in warm climates. Many of these species use to grow in vine yards and olive groves, but are now threatened with extinction due to modern cultivation methods. Several can only be grown in a mediterranean climate. Over time more will be become available.
