Veltheimia bracteata — Jacinthe du Cap
Flowering occurs from the end of January, with a 30cm tall stem, and last about 2 months. The flowerspike with pink, pending tubular flowers resembles Kniphofia. Not hardy; only to be planted outdoors near the coast, (where Veltheimia naturalises in the shade of Viburnus tinus), otherwise in pots or conservatories. Its early decorative folliage and long lasting flowers also make it an excellent indoor potplant.
The genus
This genus is typical for plants originating from the transitional zone between summer and rainfall climats. Its decorative foliage appears by the end of the summer and is almost evergreen with only a short summer dormancy period . (V. capense has a real méditerranean cycle).
