Haemanthus coccineus — Paint brush
Without any prior warning, a pink bud appears early september from which develops a solitary red wax like inflorescens with lighter stamens topped with orange pollen. When the flower has gone, the two 10cm wide leaves begin to grow ... until they finally reach an impressive length of 60-70cm. This really is an extraordinary plant which deserves your full attention and a choice place around the house. The genus
Large bulbs which produce bloodred waxy flowers before the two fleshy leaves appear (excepting H. albiflos which is evergreen). Not frosthardy; can be grown in pots, but resent disturbance.
