Hedychium coronarium flavescens

The highly scented flowers are in the form of butterflies have a slight yellow haze. Leaves are upright and elongated. In interesting comunication of Janet Blenkinship Crete, Greece: This time last year I posted asking for information on growing Hedychium asI had had no success. I had lots of replies all offering similar advice.Water, humidity and feeding. What fantastic advice this was.I followed it to the letter. Lots of organicfertiliser and water, including all the outflow of my washing machine. (I donot use a comercial powder) This summer I must report that we have had the most spectacular displays. H.greenii started its scarlet display in July. Those early heads are now faded, but more have taken their place and it continues with a will. H.coronarium was a little later, unfolding its strongly fragrant whiteflowers at the beginning of August. H. coronarium flavescens made us wait, but oh it was worth it. In recent days it has started to produce its strongly fragranced cream, yellow centred, butterfly shaped flowers. All are still flowering and from the buds which are still appearing it looks as though we shall continue to have pleasure from them until at least Christmas.

The genus

Rhizomatous perennials of the ginger family are found naturally inforest edges and moist places. The tall foliage can provide a very decorative screen. The butterfly shaped flowers are very fragrant. Flowering improves when crowded and left undisturbed. Their cultivation requirements are like those of cannas and should be planted near the surface. They are also suitable to be grown in containers.
