The genus

This south african genus is very easy to recognise by its ribbed and pointed leaves. Its growth pattern is fairly late and flowering occurs from the end of April until the end of May. Even during dormancy the flowerstems and leaves remain intact and the bulbs remain easy to locate during the summer. Small bulblets are formed on the underground part of the stem which begin the grow when the plant finally desintegrates. Also makes a suitable potplant.
