Galtonia regalis
This species grows originally in moist rockeries at the altidtude of 2000m. Because of this tolerance to winter humidity this species seems more adapted to a mediterranean garden, than other Galtonia species. Its flowers are very much like G viridiflora, but the leaves and it vegetative cycle is different: the wide, pale green , rigid leaves are arched dowwards and remain active right into December. Unfortunately it has not yet set seed with us and there is little division taking place.

Galtonia is a very attractive garden plant with a long flowering period, and is easy to grow. The bulbs should be planted shallow and should be lifted in early autumn unless the soil can be kept dry during the winter as the bulbs are very prone to rotting during dormancy. Also suitable for large containers.
