Nerine bowdenii

N. bowdenii, the most commonly grown nerine, is a summer grower with a short winter dormancy which makes it quite frosthardy. In the wild it is found high up in the South African Drakensberg mountains where the winters can be cold. To be left undisturbed for several years in order to achieve consistent flowering.
The genus
The south african genus Nerine is well known as a cutflower, but also makes an excellent garden plant. The almost evergreen species from the eastern part of South Africa (Eastern Cape, Natal and Transvaal) have a very short dormancy after flowering in December. The following species can be transplanted during winter : N. bowdenii , N. undulata and N. filifolia. In the warmer regions these plants need partial shade. The wintergrowing (summerdormant) species, featured in our summer catalog, come from the Western Cape. This section includes the less hardy N. sarniensis and its hybrids, beautiful cutflowers available in many different shades.
