Asphodelus aestivus
A cluster of hort and thick tuberous roots like Dahlia and Eremurus. Commonly found around the Mediterranean sea on the beaches and more inland on the banks of the roads, where it is winter grower and summer dormant. The appearance of the plant is very mich like an Eremurus, until the multibranched inflorescence come up with numerous white flowers. Makes an interesting garden subject in a well drained sunny position.
The genus
A fairly common meditarranean genus with white flowers marked with a brown median line on th epetals. Homerus called the Asphodelus the immortal flower in Elysium and is traditionally used at funerals. The tubers has were eaten during famines.
