The genus
The so called "Iris of Brazil" which occurs in the mountainous regions of Tropical America. Persistent foliage arranged in basal fans. The very exotic but short lasting flowers appear over a period of 4-6 weeks during the summer. Small plantlets are formed on the flowerstalks which will bent down to root 70-120cm further away from the mother plant (which gave rise to the nickname "walking iris").
