The genus
The rhizomes produce a fan of swordlike evergreen leaves. At the beginning of the summer, racemes of curious pawlike long lasting flowers appear : a tubular perianth topped with 6 short lobes. Establishment and growth is quite slow. Very suitable for regions with a hot and dry summer. In cooler zones it should be grown under protection. The best planting period is at the beginning of the active growth period. This genus is subsceptable to chlorose in alcaline soils.
