Nerine manselli X
An english breeder Mansell introduced his famous hybrids in1875, some of which are still going strong. He crossed essentially N. sarnienses x N flexuosa/humilis. This hybrid has several features in common with N. bowdenii 'Pink Triumf'. Known to be evergreen, but here this hybrid summer dormant (June). After a short dormancy period (June-July) the 15mm wide leaves appear during August-Septembre. Flowering is situated earlier (between 'Afterglow' and 'Pink Triumf') and the scape is taller and stronger than 'Pink Triumf'.
The genus
The south african genus Nerine is well known as a cutflower, but also makes an excellent garden plant. The almost evergreen species from the eastern part of South Africa (Eastern Cape, Natal and Transvaal) have a very short dormancy after flowering in December. The following species can be transplanted during winter : N. bowdenii , N. undulata and N. filifolia. In the warmer regions these plants need partial shade. The wintergrowing (summerdormant) species, featured in our summer catalog, come from the Western Cape.
