Paeonia cambessedesii — Pivoine

Endemic to the Balearic Islands, surviving on rocky slopes and scrubland in northern Majorca, Paeonia cambessedesii is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial peony reaching 25-60 cm. Its purplish stems bear compound leaves with glossy, blue-green leaflets marked with purple veins and a purple underside. In spring, a single cup-shaped, pale to purplish pink flower opens, with purple filaments and yellow anthers, and a slight fragrance. It grows best in full sun, in well-drained soil, and dies down completely in autumn.
