Sternbergia fisheriana

Native to the Caucasus, Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria, growing in dry stony ground, Sternbergia fisheriana (often sold as S. fischeriana, now included under S. vernalis) bears bright yellow, star-shaped flowers with narrow 3-4 cm segments in spring, appearing together with the shiny, dark green, strap-like leaves. The globular bulb should be planted deep, and a warm, dry summer rest is essential for good flowering the following year.
