Hymenocallis littoralis

Native to the coasts of the south-eastern United States, Mexico, Central and South America, Hymenocallis littoralis forms a clump of glossy, dark green, evergreen leaves 60-70 cm tall. From midsummer to late autumn it bears umbels of 4 to 6 large, vanilla-scented white flowers shaped like spiders, each with a central cup and six long, slender petals. It thrives in rich, moist soil in sun or partial shade and can even be grown in boggy or semi-aquatic conditions.
