Allium macleanii

Native to Central Asia (Afghanistan, Pakistan and the former Soviet Central Asian republics), Allium macleanii is a sturdy allium with strap-shaped, bright green leaves. In early summer (June-July), upright stems up to 1 m tall carry a dense, spherical umbel 6-7 cm across, packed with small, star-shaped purple flowers. Closely related to A. hollandicum, it is a parent of many giant hybrids such as 'Globemaster'. Easy to grow, it needs light to medium, well-drained soil and a sunny position.
