Brunsvigia josephinae

Native to South Africa's Cape region, Brunsvigia josephinae, or Josephine's lily, is one of the largest bulbous Amaryllidaceae, with a bulb up to 20 cm across, often partly exposed above ground. In late summer and autumn, before the grey-blue leaves appear, a sturdy stem about 65 cm tall bears a huge candelabra-like umbel of 30 to 40 dark red, tubular flowers. This spectacular bloom may take up to a decade to appear after sowing. It requires full sun, sharp drainage and a dry summer rest.
