The precise identity of this Allium could not be confirmed, so this description is given at genus level. Widespread across the Northern Hemisphere, Allium comprises over 900 bulbous species, including garlic and onion, recognisable by their characteristic sulphurous scent, which makes them unappealing to rodents. Ornamental alliums bear, from spring to summer depending on species, spherical or loose umbels of small, star-shaped flowers above narrow, strap-like foliage. Undemanding, they thrive in well-drained soil and full sun, and suit borders as well as mixed beds.
