Hypoxis argentea

Native to grassland and rocky outcrops of southern Africa (notably the Eastern Cape province of South Africa), Hypoxis argentea grows in moist, sandy-loamy soils. A herbaceous perennial arising from a corm, it forms a tuft of narrow, ribbon-like leaves covered in fine silvery silky hairs, reaching 10 to 30 cm. From spring to summer it produces star-shaped, six-tepalled, bright yellow flowers on slender stalks. It needs full sun, soil that drains well but stays cool while growing, and tolerates a drier rest in winter.
