Anemone nemorosa

Widespread in the woodlands of temperate Europe, where it often indicates ancient forest, Anemone nemorosa is a low rhizomatous perennial, 10-15 cm tall. Its deeply three-lobed leaves appear alongside the flowers. In early spring, before the tree canopy leafs out, it produces a solitary, star-shaped flower with 6-8 white tepals, occasionally tinged pink or mauve, surrounding yellow stamens. The foliage dies back by early summer. It requires light dappled shade and a cool, humus-rich, well-drained soil.
