Commelina coelestis

Native to open woodland edges and grassy slopes of Mexico and Central America at medium to high elevation, Commelina coelestis is a tuberous perennial with a spreading rootstock. It forms an upright clump about 60 cm tall with lance-shaped leaves, producing from late summer into autumn numerous small, three-petalled, brilliant cobalt-blue flowers with yellow stamens. The foliage dies back in winter after the first frosts. It needs a sunny to partly shaded position and cool, moist soil, and can become vigorously spreading, even invasive, under favourable conditions.
