Crocus chrysanthus

Native to the Balkans (Greece, Bulgaria) and western Anatolia in Turkey, Crocus chrysanthus grows in alpine meadows and on rocky slopes. Low-growing (7-10 cm), it produces narrow leaves with a silvery central stripe that appear together with the flowers. From late winter onward, each corm bears one to two goblet-shaped flowers in yellow, white or purple, often bicoloured and lightly scented, closing at night and reopening by day. Like other crocuses, it needs sharp drainage, full sun and a dry summer dormancy to thrive.
