Widespread from the Himalaya to western Malesia (India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, southern China), Cymbidium aloifolium is an epiphytic, occasionally lithophytic orchid of dry deciduous forest, growing on tree trunks, branches and mossy rocks between 0 and 1500 m elevation. Its pseudobulbs bear 4 to 5 fleshy, strap-shaped leaves resembling those of an aloe, hence the name. In winter and early spring it produces a long pendant inflorescence carrying up to 75 yellow-green flowers striped red-brown, with a white lip marked in red. It needs bright filtered light, good root aeration and warm, humid conditions.
