Gladiolus imbricatus

Native to southeastern Europe and Turkey (Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece), Gladiolus imbricatus grows in wet meadows and marshes, up to 2500 m elevation in mountain areas. A perennial 30-100 cm tall, with an erect, glabrous, unbranched stem arising from a spherical corm wrapped in parallel fibres, it bears sword-shaped leaves over 10 mm wide, shorter than the stem. Flowering in June and July produces a dense, one-sided spike of 4 to 12 pale carmine to deep purple flowers, pollinated by bees and bumblebees. Unlike most Mediterranean gladioli, it requires cool, moist soil and full sun rather than summer drought.
