Boophone disticha

Native to southern Africa (South Africa, Lesotho), Boophone disticha grows in dry grassland and on rocky slopes in summer-rainfall regions. Its large, semi-buried bulb can reach 25 cm across, wrapped in papery brown tunics. In spring (September-October), a stout scape up to 1.5 m tall bears a spherical umbel of fragrant, star-shaped pink to red flowers, appearing before the long, fan-arranged leaves emerge. In the wild, flowering is often triggered by veld fires. A toxic plant, it needs full sun and sharp drainage, and rarely blooms in cultivation.
