Polyxena corymbosa

Native to seasonally moist sandy flats in the southwestern Cape (South Africa), Polyxena corymbosa (now included in the genus Lachenalia) is a small winter-growing geophyte 5-15 cm tall. Its soft, fleshy bulb produces 4-6 erect, channelled linear leaves, appearing in autumn alongside a corymb-like cluster of honey-scented lilac to pink flowers with a darker keel, opening before the leaves fully expand. The plant becomes completely dormant through the hot, dry summer. In cultivation it needs free-draining soil, winter watering and protection from summer moisture.
