Arisaema urashima

Native to Japanese woodlands, particularly near the coast, Arisaema urashima (now classified as Arisaema thunbergii subsp. urashima) is a striking tuberous perennial. A single leaf, divided into 11-15 narrow, dark green leaflets, tops a dark maroon, hood-like spathe in late spring, enclosing a spadix of the same colour extended into a long, thread-like appendage up to 45-60 cm, resembling a fishing line — hence its name, inspired by the legend of Urashima Tarō. Decorative red berries ripen in late summer after the foliage dies back. It needs cool, moist shade and humus-rich soil.
