Scilla bifolia

Native to central and southern Europe as well as Turkey, Scilla bifolia grows in open woodland and grassland at low to mid elevations. This small bulb, about 2 cm across, typically produces two fleshy, glossy, lance-shaped leaves and one to six scapes 8-15 cm tall, each bearing a one-sided raceme of 2 to 10 small, star-shaped, gentian-blue flowers, occasionally pink or white, lightly fragrant. Flowering is early, starting in March. It naturalises readily in cool, humus-rich soil, in partial shade.
