Allium atroviolaceum / schubertii

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
This listing covers two ornamental Alliums with large umbels. Allium schubertii, from the eastern Mediterranean to central Asia (Israel, Syria, Turkey, Iran), produces in spring a spectacular spherical umbel 20-30 cm across, with star-shaped pink-purple flowers on pedicels of very unequal length, giving a firework-like effect. Allium atroviolaceum, from the Near and Middle East to the Caucasus, bears a denser, more compact umbel, dark purple to red-violet, on a scape up to 1 m tall. Both species need full sun, well-drained soil and a dry summer rest.
