Allium scabriscapum

Allium scabriscapum is the type species of section Scabriscapa, native to a broad area from south-eastern Turkey through Iran to Central Asia. This bulbous geophyte grows on rocky mountain slopes and scree in sharply drained sites. Its bulb is wrapped in reticulated tunics with a pinkish tinge. Flowering occurs in early summer (June-July), producing an umbel of star-shaped flowers with pointed tepals on an upright stem. Little documented in cultivation, this west Asian species suits dry, sunny rock gardens in poor, freely draining soil.
