Watsonia tabularis

Endemic to the Cape Peninsula and the adjacent Cape Flats (South Africa), Watsonia tabularis grows on rocky sandstone slopes around Table Mountain, from which it takes its name. This cormous geophyte forms a fan of evergreen sword-shaped leaves and, from late spring into summer, a branched stem 1.2-1.5 m tall bearing 20-30 scentless, trumpet-shaped salmon-pink flowers. Odourless but highly conspicuous, the flowers are pollinated by nectar-feeding birds. It is grown in full sun in well-drained sandy soil, with watering during the growing season.
