Babiana Kew hybrids

The genus Babiana (Iridaceae), native to southern Africa, comprises around sixty cormous species, whose name recalls that baboons eat their underground organs. The 'Kew Hybrids', selected from Babiana stricta, form short clumps of lance-shaped, pleated, hairy leaves. In spring, they bear 7 to 10 lightly scented funnel-shaped flowers in a wide range of colours (white, lavender, pink, blue, purple), often with a contrasting eye. Hardy in mild climates, they require full sun and a light, well-drained soil, with a dry summer dormancy period.
