Babiana Kew hybrids

The genus Babiana (Iridaceae), native to southern Africa, includes about sixty cormous species, its name recalling that baboons dig up and eat the underground corms. The 'Kew Hybrids', selected from Babiana stricta, form short tufts of pleated, hairy, lance-shaped leaves. In spring they bear 7 to 10 lightly fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers in a wide colour range (white, lavender, pink, blue, purple), often with a contrasting eye. Hardy in mild climates, they need full sun and light, well-drained soil, with a dry summer dormancy.
