Babiana fimbriata

Endemic to the Northern Cape and north-western Western Cape (South Africa), between Garies, Nuwerus and the Knersvlakte, Babiana fimbriata, nicknamed the "Twisty Bobbejaantjie", is a cormous geophyte of the Iridaceae found in the sandy soils of Namaqualand. Like other babianas, it produces pleated, hairy leaves emerging in a low basal rosette. In spring, a short stem bears funnel-shaped flowers with distinctive twisted or fringed tepals, giving the species its common name. It requires full sun, very free-draining soil and a dry summer rest, typical of Namaqualand geophytes.
