Scilla madeirensis

Endemic to the island of Madeira, Scilla madeirensis (Madeiran squill) is a rare bulbous Asparagaceae with a large amethyst-purple bulb up to 10 cm across. The fleshy, pointed leaves, up to 30 cm long, are often spotted with purple. In late autumn, a 40-60 cm scape appears, bearing a dense, conical raceme of small blue-violet flowers resembling a bottlebrush. The plant undergoes a brief summer dormancy. Not frost-hardy (minimum 5°C), it requires full sun, sharp drainage, and winter protection in cold climates.
