Allium dichlamydeum

Endemic to the coastal cliffs of California (from Santa Barbara to Mendocino counties), Allium dichlamydeum grows on rocky slopes and grassy bluffs overlooking the Pacific. Its small brown-grey bulb, coated with a faint herringbone pattern, rarely exceeds 1.5 cm across. A stout, leafless stem 10-30 cm tall, surrounded by 3-6 linear leaves, bears in late spring a dense umbel of 5-30 star-shaped, bright magenta to fuchsia flowers. It is one of the latest-blooming of California's wild onions, thriving in full sun on well-drained, even poor, soil near the sea.
