Ixia rouxii

Endemic to a small area of the Western Cape (Breede River Valley, near Wellington and the Paardeberg, South Africa), Ixia rouxii is a critically endangered species, long thought extinct, now surviving only in a few remnant patches of lowland fynbos and renosterveld. This geophyte reaches 50 cm, with branched stems and short leaves, producing star-shaped, bluish-purple flowers with a dark centre in spring. About 500 individuals were rediscovered on a single 44-hectare fragment, making it one of the most threatened South African bulbous plants.
