Iris histrioides

Native to the mountains of Turkey, where it grows in high-altitude alpine meadows, Iris histrioides is a bulbous iris of the Reticulata group. Its bulb is wrapped in a dense, brown fibrous network. In late winter, before the leaves emerge, it produces large (6-7 cm), fragrant, mid- to deep blue-violet flowers with heavily blotched falls and a yellow ridge. The leaves, square in cross-section and thicker than those of other Reticulatas, later develop up to 40-50 cm long. Vigorous and hardy, it is an important parent of garden hybrids such as 'Harmony'.
