Orthrosanthus multiflorus

Native to southern Australia (Western Australia, South Australia including Kangaroo Island, and Victoria), Orthrosanthus multiflorus, known as morning iris, forms clumps of tough, strap-like, mid- to dark green leaves up to 50 cm long. In spring and early summer, wiry stems bear numerous star-shaped flowers about 4 cm across, mauve and white to blue-violet, opening in the morning and fading by afternoon, each lasting only a day but replaced continuously through the season. Drought-tolerant once established, this Iridaceae species prefers full sun and well-drained soil.
