Geissorhiza splendissima

Endemic to the Bokkeveld Plateau around Nieuwoudtville in the Northern Cape, South Africa, Geissorhiza splendidissima grows on clay soils. This small cormous Iridaceae, with woody imbricate tunics, reaches 8-20 cm tall, with linear, winged, ciliate-margined leaves and a velvety stem. The glossy, deep blue-violet flowers have cupped tepals and stamens deflected to one side, with distinctive red-brown anthers. Spring flowering (August-September in its native range) is spectacular, but the species is highly localized and listed as Vulnerable due to habitat loss. Grow in full sun with sharp drainage.
