Calochortus albus

Native to California (Sierra Nevada foothills and southern Coast Ranges), Calochortus albus grows in open woodland, rocky scrub and partly shaded grassland, up to about 1500 m. This bulb produces a slender, glaucous, erect to arching stem, 20-80 cm tall, bearing globular, nodding, lantern-shaped flowers, pearly white to deep pink or almost wine-red. Known as the fairy lantern, it flowers in late winter and spring before going summer-dormant. Grow in full sun to part shade, in well-drained soil kept dry in summer.
