Dahlia sherfii

Native to the mountains of northwestern Mexico (Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa, Jalisco), Dahlia sherffii grows on rocky slopes, ledges, fields and roadsides at elevations of 1,800 to 2,550 m. This tuberous-rooted perennial forms a herbaceous clump 60 to 130 cm tall. In late summer it bears pink to lilac, daisy-like flower heads with a yellow centre, typical of the Asteraceae. Its tubers were traditionally harvested and eaten by local populations. In cultivation it requires well-drained soil and winter protection where frosts are severe.
