Rhodohypoxis baurii

Native to the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa, Rhodohypoxis baurii is a small, clump-forming tuberous perennial with narrow, hairy, lance-shaped leaves 8 to 10 cm long. From October to February it bears numerous star-shaped, six-tepalled flowers 2 to 3.5 cm across, in white, pink, red or purple, carried on hairy peduncles. A sharp bend at the base of the floral tube almost closes the flower's throat. It spreads by underground stolons. Suited to rockeries or pots, it likes soil that is well drained yet moist during the growing season, with winter protection.
