Zigadenus venenosus

Widespread from British Columbia south to Nebraska, Colorado and California, Zigadenus venenosus (Toxicoscordion venenosum) grows in spring-wet meadows, hillsides and montane to alpine habitats. This Melanthiaceae forms a scaly, egg-shaped bulb 3-5 cm long, with V-shaped, grass-like basal leaves. From early spring to late June, a stem 20-70 cm tall bears a raceme of small, cream to greenish-white flowers, sometimes pink-tinged, with six tepals each marked by a yellow-green gland at the base. All parts of the plant, especially the bulb, are highly toxic, giving it the common name death camas.
