Gladiolus horombensis

Endemic to Madagascar, Gladiolus horombensis was described by botanist Peter Goldblatt in 1990 from specimens collected on the Horombe Plateau, near Ihosy in the Fianarantsoa region. Like other Malagasy gladioli, it is a cormous plant with narrow, sword-shaped leaves, producing a one-sided spike of irregular, funnel-shaped flowers with tepals fused at the base into a short tube. Classified as Near Threatened, the species grows on the grassy highland plateaus of southern Madagascar. In cultivation, as with other Gladiolus, it requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
