Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
The precise identity of this plant could not be confirmed: only its membership in the family Amaryllidaceae is indicated, with no identifiable genus or species. This large family of bulbous (rarely rhizomatous, as in Agapanthus or Clivia) plants comprises about 73 genera and 1,600 species, distributed mainly in tropical and warm temperate regions. It includes well-known ornamentals such as Narcissus, Amaryllis, Crinum, Nerine and Galanthus. Leaves are strap-shaped, and flowers, often grouped in an umbel atop a scape, have six tepals. Cultivation needs vary by genus, but most require well-drained soil and a period of dormancy.
