Sparaxis villosa

Native to the lowlands of the western Cape in South Africa, from the Cape Peninsula to Piketberg and Citrusdal, Sparaxis villosa grows in renosterveld on heavy clay or granite-derived soils, often in rocky sites. This cormous Iridaceae reaches 12-35 cm tall, with lance-shaped leaves and distinctive coarse-fibred corm tunics. In spring it produces small, zygomorphic yellow flowers, with an erect to slightly hooded dorsal tepal clearly exceeding the lower tepals. Like other Sparaxis, it needs full sun, well-drained soil and a dry summer rest to flower well.
