As the exact identity of this Bellevalia remains uncertain (likely close to B. mauritanica from North Africa, or related forms from Asia Minor), this entry describes the genus in general. Bellevalia (Asparagaceae) comprises about 50 bulbous species from the Mediterranean basin and the Near East to the Caucasus, growing from a tunicated bulb and producing strap-shaped or channelled leaves. In spring, a sturdy stem bears a dense raceme of small, bell-shaped flowers, usually deep purple to violet, sometimes white or bluish. Grow in full sun, in well-drained soil, with a dry summer rest after flowering.
