Brodiaea purdyi

Endemic to the Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California, Brodiaea purdyi grows in open woodland, often on serpentine soils. This small cormous Asparagaceae produces an erect flowering stem barely reaching 10 cm, bearing an umbel of urn-shaped, blue-violet flowers with narrow, spreading tepals. Three fertile stamens and three prominent, protruding sterile staminodes stand at the centre of the flower. Flowering occurs in late spring to summer. Like other Brodiaea species, it needs full sun, well-drained soil, and a dry summer rest typical of California's Mediterranean climate.
