Tulipa subpraestans

Tulipa subpraestans, now treated as part of Tulipa praestans, is native to grassy, rocky subalpine slopes of Tajikistan, in the Pamir-Alai range of Central Asia. This robust botanical tulip, 25-45 cm tall, bears 3-7 grey-green leaves, downy and fringed with fine hairs along the edges. Its distinctive feature is producing several cup-shaped flowers per stem from a single bulb (up to 4-5), in bright orange-red to scarlet, opening in spring. It requires full sun, well-drained soil, and a dry, warm summer rest.
