Pleione formosana

Native to southeastern China and Taiwan, Pleione formosana grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte on moss-covered rocks, logs and tree trunks between 1500 and 2000 m altitude, in humid, foggy sites. This small terrestrial orchid forms ovoid pseudobulbs 1-3 cm long, each bearing a single pleated, deciduous leaf. In spring, each pseudobulb produces one large pale to deep pink flower with a fringed lip blotched red or brown, appearing before the new leaf unfolds. Grown in pots in free-draining, humus-rich compost, it prefers partial shade and a cool, dry winter rest to flower well.
